Egghair Bowie: The curious time in the early to mid 1980s when David Bowie’s hair looked as though he’d put scrambled eggs on his head in lieu of hair. Ranging from very nearly white to very very yellow, this hair was sometimes curled, permed, or left to it’s own devices—sitting fluffy, but fairly straight, on top of Bowie’s head.

Later in the 1980s, the egghair morphed into what is scientifically known as cockatiel hair but what is more generally identified as Chanticleer hair after a beloved cartoon rooster’s hair-do. This evolution is due to Bowie’s hair having a constant desire through his life for extreme verticality. It is believed that the Chanticleer look was the hair’s response—after many years biding it’s time—and revenge against the gel-bombing which took place between 1975-76.

Bowie and his vertical-striving hair reached an uncomfortable balance in the mid-90s with what is known equally as the “Crazy Uncle Bowie” phase or the “neo-Ziggy” phase, as it was dyed orange, cut short, and spiked. The truce was uneasy, leading to some peace-keeping efforts led primarily by Hippie Bowie Hair starting in 1999.
